Educational programme for the Rickmansworth Waterways Trust
In 2006, the DFET provided a grant of £20,000 to support the educational programme carried out by the Rickmansworth Waterways Trust Ltd (RWT). "Learning at the Lock" is a hands-on programme aimed at Key Stages 1&2 that enables children to work a lock and find out about the history of Britain's waterways, the way of life for canal people and the wildlife and ecosystems supported by canals.
The programme welcomes more than 1000 children each year from all backgrounds, especially the most disadvantaged.
In 2007, "Learning at the Lock" won the Education Category at the Renaissance Awards, which are organised by the Waterways Trust and the British Urban Regeneration Association (BURA) to recognise best practice in UK waterway improvements.
